ENCINITAS — An official with San Diego Gas & Electric gave a presentation to City Council Jan. 21 outlining new technology available to homeowners and businesses that may conserve electricity and save money.
Claudia Carrillo, a public affairs manager with the power company, said smart meters are digital meters with two-way communication that send energy use information to SDG&E. Unlike existing meters, smart meters have a computer chip that records energy usage. In the future, energy use information will be recorded every hour at your home and every 15 minutes at a business. Council agrees to increase pedestrian safety
CARDIFF-BY-THE-SEA — City Council voted unanimously to install an all-way stop at the intersection of Mackinnon Avenue and Villa Cardiff Drive during its Jan. 14 meeting.
In response to the Cardiff School District superintendent’s request last year, city staff investigated ways to increase pedestrian safety. Accessing the east side and west side of Mackinnon Avenue can be a dangerous proposition according to city traffic engineers. Especially since the area is accessed mainly by school children during high traffic times of day. Click on link to continue reading at The Coast News. By Wehtahnah Tucker

Developer brings sand to the beach
Trucks moved at high rates of speed onto Ponto Beach in south Carlsbad carrying loads of sand during low tide Jan. 8. The unusual activity marked the beginning of a monthlong sand replenishment program that will eventually deposit 37,000 cubic yards of so-called opportunistic sand on the beach. The sand originated from the construction site of Pacific Station in downtown Encinitas. The $40 million mixed-use development at 687 South Coast Highway, anchored by a Whole Foods Market, will include 47 condominiums, restaurants, shops and offices. Recycle your Batteries for free
Did you know that it is illegal as well as unsafe to dispose of household batteries in the trash? Besides containing materials that can be hazardous if released in the environment, even intact batteries that aren't 100% discharged present a potential hazard. In light of this we invite everyone to Recycle your batteries at the Cardiff Library. We now have the means to safely facilitate battery recycling. All we ask is that you cover the positive terminal of the battery with any style of tape (when the positive terminals of batteries that have any amount of charge touch, the result can be overheating and a possible fire). We have bags to place the batteries in, and a safe receptacle to place those bags in. So help us help you make the responsible choice for your home and your environment by recycling your used batteries here at the Cardiff branch!
